The conclusion of a motor vehicle liability insurance policy is a basic requirement for the registration of a motor vehicle. This is therefore a compulsory insurance. Anyone who cannot provide proof of such insurance is not allowed to drive their vehicle on the roads in this country. There are numerous different insurers offering motor vehicle liability insurance at different conditions. For the determination of the premiums to be paid, however, the so-called regional class is relevant for all providers. We explain what it's all about in the Dusseldorf registration district.
Individual criteria for calculating insurance premiums
In addition to the individual premium structure of the insurers, there are various calculation factors according to which the amount of the insurance premium is determined. These include the no-claims class, the regional class as well as the type and year of construction of the vehicle. The amount of the insurance premium can be influenced individually with further individual specifications:
- Exclusion of drivers who do not live in the same household
- Exclusion of drivers under the age of 25
- Parking of the vehicle in a garage, a carport or on a private parking space
- Low annual mileage
A detailed insurance comparison is recommended before concluding a corresponding contract. In doing so, the conditions offered should be compared with individual requirements and possibilities.
Regional classes for Dusseldorf
One of the important criteria for calculating car insurance is the regional class, which is redefined by German insurers once a year for the approximately 400 registration districts. Behind this factor are various statistics that take into account, among other things, the number of accidents in the area and the number of stolen vehicles. In general, a distinction is made between the regional class for motor vehicle liability, partial cover and fully comprehensive insurance.
According to GDV, the current index value for motor vehicle liability insurance in Dusseldorf is 119.81. This means that the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia falls into regional class 11 out of 12. In the case of major German cities with over 300.000 inhabitants only Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Nuremberg and Essen are classified higher.
For partial casco the index value is 89.25 (class 5 of 16) and for comprehensive insurance at 107.06 (class 6 of 9). The federal average is indicated in each case with 100.
New regional class when moving to Dusseldorf
Anyone moving to Dusseldorf from the surrounding area, for example, will have to reckon with an increase in insurance premiums, since the Dusseldorf registration district is classified in a different, higher regional class than the surrounding area. This is similar in many other major cities. If you move to Dusseldorf from another major city, little will probably change for you. Only Munster is among the major cities with over 300.000 inhabitants with a liability class of 2, well below all other comparable major cities. When changing insurance, one can achieve savings in insurance premiums, which is why a regular review is worthwhile.
Old license plate, new license plate
If the license plate is changed, there is an automatic classification in the new regional class, which is based on the main residence. However, the current legislation allows to continue using the old license plate number. The re-registration of the vehicle with the registration office is nevertheless necessary, so that a change of the regional class cannot be evaded thereby. If you miss the reregistration, you risk a fine. So if you keep your old license plate, you only save the cost of embossing new license plates. The fees for the re-registration are still incurred.
Notify the insurance company of a move
A move must be reported to the insurance company. The policyholder is obliged to communicate his new address. As a result, the regional class is adjusted by the insurance company. This occurs even if the old license plate is retained.
