"After our meeting, Angelo said to me, 'We have a project that you need to take care of right away.'! I hesitated a bit because Christmas was coming up. Nevertheless, I did as I was instructed and traveled to Rome to visit the customer. The customer was the well-known lawyer Cerroni," Kalle recalls the moments before entering the Italian market in 1997.

Our Italian story began in December 1997, when I was still going to the playground and waiting for Santa Claus to arrive. Meanwhile, my father Kalle Kivela visited the Macpresse company in Milan. He is the founder of Cross Wrap. This visit was a game changer for us. After our meeting, Angelo said to me: "We have a project that you have to take care of immediately! I hesitated a bit because Christmas was just around the corner. Nevertheless, I did as I was instructed and traveled to Rome to see the customer. The customer was the well-known lawyer Cerroni," Kalle recalls the moments before he entered the Italian market in 1997.

After a month, the customer flew to Finland to see our packaging machine and the new EBS plant. In the same year, the first machines were installed in Italy. Since then, Cross Wrap has been the market leader in Italy and in other countries for packaging machines for waste materials, and we are very grateful for it.

One of the most important projects from those old days refers to Rome's Malagrotta waste disposal plant, built by Sorain Cecchini and still in operation today. Malagrotta I was supplied with the first machine in 1999. Two further packaging machines were then installed in Malagrotta II in 2007. The two machines were recently equipped with a Tosibox modem that allows remote service access and upgrades and effective production monitoring.

In 2017, I followed in my father's footsteps as sales manager and responsible for the Italian market. I had the opportunity to work with today's leaders in the Italian waste management market. Meanwhile, Cross Wrap machines have conquered Italy from the north of Milan to the south of Sicily. We consider Naples as the capital of CW packaging machines. There are more than 20 machines in operation in this region. Bernardino Filipponi of the Vibeco company in Naples explains:

"We chose Cross Wrap because we think that Cross Wrap is indisputably the best equipment manufacturer in this field. The machine we bought has already been in operation for 4 years in very difficult conditions and we have never had any problems. From Verona we receive excellent support. The technicians of the company there are always ready to help us with words and deeds."

At Cross Wrap, we believe that availability to support the customer is one of the most important cornerstones of our operation. Our customer support consists of the following components:

Gaetano Rubino, owner of Rekogest, describes his CW 2200 bale wrapper after successful installation, commissioning and instruction on a sunny autumn day in Palermo in 2019.

As an enthusiastic family business operating in the niche market of bale wrapping, our motivation is to work, help and offer all our professionalism and competence to meet the needs, deadlines and objectives of the customer. In concrete terms, we demonstrate this motivation through flexibility in delivery times, fast installations, quick response in support and a proactive sales force.

Cross Wrap machines pack about 80% of the total Italian waste fuel and waste from corresponding treatment plants (RDF/SRF resp. 191210/191212) for export, including the high quality material from Rekogest. Italy exports annually more than 450.000 tons of waste material to countries such as Bulgaria, Germany, Austria, Portugal, Denmark, Spain, Croatia and Greece. Over 60% of the total waste material exported is alternative fuels and waste from waste treatment plants (191210/191212 resp. RDF/SRF as European terms). In total, Cross Wrap has installed over 40 machines in Italy, and the last one just arrived in Naples in May.

Throughout Cross Wrap's 26-year waste packaging history, Italy has always been a very important market. All of us at Cross Wrap would like to thank everyone who has been involved: without our business partners, service providers, spare parts distributors, customers, shareholders and friends, this would not have been possible.

I trust in Italy as one of the leading European export markets for alternative fuels and the promising country of high quality recycling technology. As the leading supplier of packaging machinery for waste materials, Cross Wrap looks forward to continuing to serve existing and new Italian customers in the decades to come.

In challenging times, it is best to work well with all industry stakeholders and support them as well, so that we come out of this stronger than we have been!

I am highly motivated and determined to work with all of you in the Italian waste and recycling industry.
